union shop:

the practice of requiring new employees to join a trade union, usually within thirty to ninety days. unlike the closed shop system, the union shop allows the employment of workers who are not members of a union at the time of their hiring; unlike the open shop, the union shop system forces them thereupon to join a union. see also closed shop and open shop.
