His bold National Recovery Administration (NRA) challenged the government to act in every aspect of the nation’s economy and culture with these and other so-called “Alphabet Agencies”:
TVA: Tennessee Valley Authority
NLRB: National Labor Relations Board
WPA: Works Progress Administration
CCC: Civilian Conservation Corps
SEC: Securities and Exchange Commission
SSA: Social Security Administration
OPA: Office of Price Administration.
The American people approved. They elected Roosevelt again. And again. And again. “That man in the White House” was going to remain there forever, it seemed.
Roosevelt died April 12, 1945, less than a month before World War II ended. No other president served as long as Roosevelt, and no other will.
